Sir Ed Davey back Martin Surl

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey gave his backing to the man aiming to make a comeback as Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

He described former PCC Martin Surl as a ‘Strong, independent voice for policing “.

Mr Surl was the county’s first elected PCC and remained in the job for almost 9 years until he was ousted by the Tories in 2021.

On a flying visit to the county/Gloucester, Sir Ed said: ‘In Gloucestershire we have a fantastic Police and Crime Commissioner candidate in Martin Surl who has a proven track record of putting local communities first’.

Changes to the voting system make it all but impossible for Independents to win

“I know Martin will be a strong independent voice for policing in Gloucestershire. Politics should be kept in Parliament and local police need to be able to get on with the job of solving crime and ensuring families do not have to live in fear.”

With Liberal Democrat support I can still keep the party politics out of Gloucestershire Policing.

Mr Surl was one several Independent PCCs when the role was created and surprised many when he decided to stand again as a Liberal Democrat.
